Mount Koya is surrounded by beautiful mountain paths in a wildlife reserve.
Though it only a few minutes from town, it is true that many people indeed hesitate to go hiking as their mental image is of a rather tough path that takes several hours to reach the summit.

Normally, special preparations are required for a mountain trip, and be extra careful for not getting lost.

Before the Meiji era, Mount Koya used to be forbidden for women, but they were allowed to walk the mountain paths.
We walk this historically significant path ingrained with the wishes of those who were never granted access at that time.

Many people all around the world pay a visit to this sanctuary wherein tombs of Sengoku warriors and prominent figures in Japanese history line up, and also for its stunning view of the gigantic stone pagodas along the path to Gobyo, Okunoin.

You go along a route listening to the fascinating comments on the oldest huge tree of Okunoin, the biggest tombstone, tombs of samurais, tombs of termites and so on.
